History

The MS in Bioinformatics is an initiative proposed and developed by the department of biology of the University of Bordeaux. Prior to the Bologna Process, it has been run since 2001 as a one-year diploma for post-graduate students (DESS: Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures Spécialisées). After the LMD reform, it became a two-year degree master.

Distinctive features

Our program offers a high-quality Master’s degree in bioinformatics with the implication of the researchers who teach it. The distinctive features of the program are both based on the teachings of biologist and computer scientists. They originates from several french institut of research as the INRA or CNRS. Moreover, the implication of Computer Science Teachers coming for the LaBRI (Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique https://www.labri.fr) provide a quality computer science education that prepares the students to the professional world.

Evolution

Since 2015, we have initiated an opening to the world with the proposition of a new international Track. In this context, the master of Bioinformatics of the university of Bordeaux and the “Titulo propio” « Bioinformatics and Omics » of the UPV/EHU (Bilbao, Spain) propose an International Master's Program dealing with the combined training of metagenomics and Bioinformatics.

Historique

Le master de bioinformatique est porté par l'Unité de Formation de Biologie de l'Université de Bordeaux. Avant la réforme de Bologne, il a d'abord existé sous la forme d'un diplôme d'une année appelé DESS (DESS: Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures Spécialisées). En 2005, après la réforme LMD, il est devenu un diplôme de deux années et a pris le nom de Master de Bioinformatique.

Faits remarquables

Notre programme offre un diplôme de master de haute qualité grâce à la palette de ses enseignants. Les caractéristiques remarquables du programme sont basées sur les enseignements à la fois proposés par des chercheurs en Biologie et en Informatique, lesquels sont issus de différents instituts de recherche tels que le CNRS ou l'INRA. De plus, l'implication d'enseignants chercheurs en informatique du LaBRI — Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique — nous apporte la garantie d'un enseignement informatique de qualité pour préparer nos étudiants au monde professionnel.

Evolution

Depuis 2015, nous travaillons à la mise en place d'un nouveau parcours international pour permettre à nos étudiants d'ajouter une mobilité internationale à leur formation. Dans ce contexte, le master de Bioinformatique de Bordeaux, en collaboration avec le Titulo propio de l'UPV/EHU (Bilbao, Espagne) a étendu sa palette de parcours en proposant un nouveau programme international Bioinformatics and Omics dédié à l'enseignement de la métagénomique et de la bioinformatique.

The MASTER formation offers many employment opportunities considering the high demand in the academic sector (CNRS, INRA, INSERM…) and private companies for addressing the Big Data new challenges given by the revolution of new technologies. At the end of the master, our students are recruited as researchers (PhD) or engineers in laboratories/companies related to structural, molecular biology, pharmacology or agronomics.

Moreover, private companies of biotechnology, pharmacology, agronomics or food science are also interested to recruit post-graduated students with a double competence in biology and computer science, and in addition an international experience. According to our student survey data, graduated student find their first job within the first six month after the master graduation.

La formation du MASTER permet de nombreuses opportunités dans le monde du travail grâce à la forte demande en compétences bioinformatiques des secteurs académiques (CNRS, INRA, INSERM...) ou privés (laboratoires pharmaceutiques, agronomiques ..). Cette forte demande est en lien direct avec la croissance sans précédent des données et à l'ère du Big Data, des compétences bioinformatiques sont essentielles pour relever les nouveaux défis liés aux nouvelles technologies de production de données. A l'issu de leur master, nos étudiants sont recrutés comme chercheurs (PhD) ou ingénieurs dans des laboratoires impliqués dans l'analyse de données issus de la biologie moléculaire, structurale ou encore du domaine de la santé ou de l'agronomie.

The spring semester of the second year is dedicated to an internship that has to cover a period range between 4 to 6 months in a private company or in an academic laboratory abroad. Over the years, the number of oversea internships has been increasing due to the recognition of our students skills. Also, the development of a network of former students (leading a position today) provide to our current students a wide range of internship opportunities in different fields of applications.

Le second semestre de la seconde année est dédié à un stage d'une durée allant de 4 à 6 mois. Au fil des années, le nombre des stages réalisés à l'étranger n'a cessé d'augmenter grâce à la reconnaissance des compétences de nos étudiants. Egalement, les connexions maintenues avec les anciens diplômés (aujourd'hui en poste) permet d'assurer à nos étudiants actuels un large éventail de possibilités de stages dans différents domaines d'applications.
